This project was an adaptation of two Velleman kits, one of which is now obselete, however it has been replaced by a newer version which is fully like for like compatible.
The main part of the circuit is the Velleman slow on/off dimmer the original circuit used the part no. K2657 this has been replaced by the K8028, the secondary part of the ciruit is the velleman interval timer module part no. VM136.
As these ciruits are designed by others the ciruit diagram is not shown on this site, if you require the diagram it comes with the kits which are available from Velleman.
The most complex part of this circuit is building the dimmer board, it comes in kit form and will take most constructors about 2/3 hours to construct.
The K2657 dimmer board is shown below left and the VM136 interval timer is shown on the right

When these two modules are connected together they make a highly versatile adjustable auto up/down dimmer which can be left to automatically dim incandescent light bulbs or toroidal tranformers.

The interconnections are very simple, all that is required is a mains rated pair of wires to run from the relay modules normally open contacts and the dimmers switch input.

The new version of the K2657 connects in the same way but some simple setup is required on power-up as the new K8028 is PIC controlled. This version has also been used in much the same way and a picture of the unit in use is shown below;

As can be seen in the photo above a clear cover has been fitted above the board, and also below, to protect stray fingers from the mains voltage which is present on the board when powered up, a small hole allows insertion of a probe to adjust settings by pressing the yellow switch (this is a once only operation if the unit is left constantly powered.

As mentioned at the start of this article the kits are available through velleman and many authorised stockists.
